3Passes to museums, zoos and parks

Some libraries offer passes that give free or reduced admission to local museums, zoos, gardens, science centers and historic sites. Others lend park passes that cover parking or entry. These programs vary a lot by location, so the only way to know what's available is to ask your branch or check its website.

Passes are often limited and can be reserved in advance, especially for weekends and school holidays. Read the fine print, since some cover a whole family while others admit only one or two people, and a few require you to pick up and return a physical pass by a set time.

For families, this can turn a pricey day out into an affordable one. It's also a good way to explore places in your own area you might never have thought to visit. Plan ahead, book early and keep an eye out for newly added passes, since libraries sometimes expand their lists over time.
