6Make sure your car's safety features are on file
Anti-lock brakes, airbags, automatic emergency braking, anti-theft systems and vehicle tracking devices can all qualify for discounts with some insurers. Usually the insurer pulls this information from your vehicle identification number, but those records aren't always complete, especially for optional packages or equipment added after the car left the factory.
Look through your policy documents to see which features are listed. If something is missing, such as an aftermarket alarm or a factory safety package, send your insurer proof like the window sticker, a dealer invoice or an installer's receipt. Ask the insurer to confirm in writing once the update has been made.
Keep in mind that a newer car packed with technology can also cost more to repair after a crash, which can push premiums in the other direction. If you're shopping for a vehicle, it's worth getting an insurance quote on the specific model before you buy, so the premium doesn't come as a surprise after you've signed the paperwork.
