8 Questions to Ask Before Going Solar
Solar can be a smart move for some homes and a poor fit for others, and the difference usually comes down to details that are easy to skip in a sales conversation. Before you sign anything, work through these eight questions so you understand exactly what you're buying.
1Is my roof ready to carry panels for the long haul?
Solar panels are built to last for decades, so the roof underneath them needs to be in good shape too. If your shingles are nearing the end of their life, installing panels now could mean paying to remove and reinstall the whole system when the roof is replaced a few years later.
Ask a roofer or the solar installer to inspect the roof before you commit. They can look at the age of the materials, any soft spots or leaks, and whether the structure can handle the added weight. Some homeowners choose to replace an aging roof first and then add solar, so both start their lifespans at the same time.
Also ask how the panels will be attached and how the installer seals each mounting point. Poorly sealed penetrations are a common source of leaks. A reputable company should be willing to explain its method, show you what its workmanship warranty covers, and tell you who to call if water ever shows up in the attic.
