6Question a large medical bill before you pay it

Medical bills can be confusing, and errors happen more often than many people expect. A bill might include a duplicate charge, a service you did not receive, or a claim that was processed incorrectly by your insurance plan. Paying first and asking questions later can make it harder to get money back.

Start by requesting an itemized bill from the provider and comparing it with the explanation of benefits from your insurer. If something does not match, call the billing office and ask them to walk you through it. If a claim was denied, ask your insurer why and whether it can be resubmitted or appealed.

If the bill is correct but hard to afford, ask whether the provider offers a discount for paying promptly, an interest-free payment plan, or financial assistance based on income. Many hospitals have assistance policies, but you often have to ask. Keep notes of who you spoke with and what they said, in case you need to follow up.
