8Renegotiate or freeze your gym membership

Gym memberships are a classic example of a bill that keeps charging whether you use it or not. Many people sign up with good intentions, then go only occasionally, while the monthly fee and yearly maintenance charges continue in the background. Check your recent statements to see exactly what you are paying.

If you still go regularly, call or visit the front desk and ask whether a lower tier, an off-peak membership, or a different payment schedule is available. Some gyms will match an offer from a nearby competitor or waive certain fees for long-time members. It never hurts to ask what options exist before you assume the price is fixed.

If you are not going much, ask about freezing your membership for a few months instead of canceling outright, or cancel and try free alternatives such as walking, home workouts or community recreation centers. Read your contract first, because some gyms require written notice or charge a cancellation fee.
