8Make the most of free community resources

Many communities offer resources that can replace things people often pay for. Public libraries lend far more than books, often including movies, audiobooks, museum passes, digital magazines and even tools or technology help. Senior centers frequently offer low-cost meals, exercise classes, social events and day trips.

Local parks and recreation departments may run fitness programs or walking groups at reduced rates for older adults. Community colleges sometimes allow seniors to audit classes at little or no cost, giving you a way to keep learning without paying full tuition. Volunteering at local events or venues can sometimes come with free admission as a perk.

Your local office for aging services or a nearby senior center can be a helpful starting point. Staff there can often point you toward transportation help, meal services, assistance with utility bills and free counseling on health insurance choices. Using these resources can reduce spending while also helping you stay active and connected with others in your community.
