7Rethink your deductibles

Your deductible affects both your premium and what you pay when you file a claim. Raising it usually lowers your premium, while lowering it usually raises your premium. Renewal is a good time to ask whether the balance you chose earlier still makes sense for your finances today.

Ask your insurer to show you the premium at a few deductible levels for both collision and comprehensive coverage. Some drivers keep a lower comprehensive deductible because claims such as cracked windshields or hail damage can happen even to careful drivers. Others raise both to reduce their premium. Seeing the actual figures side by side makes the decision clearer.

Whatever you choose, be sure you could pay the deductible without hardship if you had a claim next week. If you have built up an emergency fund since your last renewal, a higher deductible may be more realistic now. If money is tight, a lower deductible may give you more peace of mind.
