8Decide whether you still need every coverage
Over time, some coverages may become less useful. Collision and comprehensive on an older car with a low market value, rental reimbursement when you have a second vehicle, or roadside assistance you already get through another source may all be worth reconsidering. Paying for overlapping protection is a common and avoidable expense.
Start by looking up your car's approximate value and comparing it with what you pay each year for physical damage coverage. Check whether your credit card, auto club membership or vehicle warranty already provides roadside help or rental benefits. If your car is financed or leased, confirm what coverage your lender requires before changing anything.
On the other hand, do not drop coverage simply to make a number look smaller. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, for example, can be valuable if you are hit by someone without enough insurance. If you are unsure, ask a licensed agent to explain what each coverage does and what could happen without it.
