4Should I buy, finance or lease?

How you pay for solar can matter as much as the equipment itself. Paying cash usually gives you the most long-term value, because you own the system outright and keep any savings it produces. It also requires the biggest upfront commitment.

A solar loan lets you own the system while spreading the cost out. Compare the interest rate, the loan term, any dealer fees built into the price, and whether the monthly payment is likely to be lower than the electricity it replaces. Some loans look affordable only because the term is very long.

With a lease or power purchase agreement, a company owns the panels and you pay for their use or their output. This can reduce upfront costs, but you generally won't receive ownership incentives, and the contract may include yearly payment increases. Leases can also complicate selling your home, so read the transfer terms carefully and consider asking a financial advisor to review the contract.
